Guéret is the prefecture of the Creuse department in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of central France. Tucked away on the foothills of the Massif Central, it is one of the quietest and greenest department capitals in the country. The town's origins date back to the 7th century when it grew around a monastery founded by Saint Pardoux. Its urban landscape is defined by the solid grey granite architecture typical of the Limousin region. Guéret has successfully rebranded itself as a destination for outdoor enthusiasts and families, thanks to the nearby Chabrières forest. This forest houses two major attractions: the Giant Labyrinth, which holds a world record for its size, and the Wolf Park of Chabrières, where grey wolves can be observed in a semi-wild habitat. Culturally, the Museum of Art and Archaeology provides insight into the region's heritage, including famous Limoges enamels. The local economy is primarily driven by public administration, regional healthcare, and tourism focused on ecological preservation and nature exploration.
