Montbard is a historic town in the Côte-d'Or department of Burgundy, located in the Brenne valley and served by the Burgundy Canal. The town is globally recognized as the 'City of Buffon,' named after the illustrious 18th-century naturalist Georges-Louis Leclerc, Count of Buffon, who was born here and composed much of his 'Histoire Naturelle' in the local chateau gardens. Beyond its intellectual heritage, Montbard has been a cornerstone of the French metal industry since the Industrial Revolution. It is particularly renowned for its production of high-performance stainless steel tubes, supplying global aerospace and energy sectors. Geographically, Montbard occupies a strategic position at the crossroads of major transport routes, including the Paris-Lyon TGV line, which makes it an essential economic hub for northern Burgundy while retaining its scenic charm and proximity to the UNESCO-listed Fontenay Abbey.
