Fontenay Abbey (France)

Weather…

Fontenay Abbey was founded in 1118 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and is one of the oldest Cistercian monasteries in France. Located in a secluded valley in Burgundy, it embodies the Cistercian well-suited of monastic isolation and functional simplicity. The entire complex, comprising the abbey church, the cloister, the chapter house, and a medieval forge, has remained remarkably intact over the centuries. Of particular note is the 12th-century forge, which is considered one of the oldest industrial buildings in Europe, demonstrating the advanced technological skills of the monks. Fontenay was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1981 as an exceptional testament to Cistercian architecture and lifestyle. Today, the abbey remains in private ownership but is meticulously maintained and open to the public, offering a rare glimpse into the self-sufficient monastic life of the Middle Ages.
