Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux is a historic gem in the Drôme Provençale region, boasting a legacy that dates back to the Roman Empire. Originally the capital of the Tricastini tribe, it was known in antiquity as Augusta Tricastinorum. Curiously, the town's name resulted from a medieval mistranslation of 'Tricastinorum' as 'three castles', though the town never actually had three. The crown jewel of its architecture is the 12th-century Cathedral of Notre-Dame, a masterpiece of Provençal Romanesque art. Modern Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux is world-famous as a premier center for the black truffle (Tuber melanosporum). Each winter, it hosts a highly prestigious truffle market that attracts chefs and gourmets from across the globe, supported by the dedicated 'Maison de la Truffe'. The old town features a maze of narrow streets, shaded squares, and grand Renaissance houses that reflect its former wealth. Economically, the area is also defined by the nearby Tricastin nuclear power plant, which has brought modern development to this traditionally rural landscape. Surrounded by the rolling vineyards of the Grignan-les-Adhémar appellation and bustling lavender fields, the town gives a well-suited blend of high-tech industry, ancient history, and gourmet culture.
