Bourg-Saint-Andéol, perched on the right bank of the Rhône River in the Ardèche department, is a town that breathes history from every stone. It is uniquely famous for housing the only Mithraic bas-relief in France still in its original location, carved into the cliff face at the Tourne springs during the 3rd century AD. The town's significance flourished throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as it served as a primary residence for the powerful Bishops of Viviers. This ecclesiastical influence is best seen in the Palais des Évêques, a sprawling architectural complex with striking views over the river. The historic core of the town is remarkably well-preserved, featuring more than twenty classified monuments, including private mansions like the Maison Nicolaï and the Romanesque Church of Saint-Andéol, which holds the sarcophagus of the martyred saint. Beyond its architecture, the town is known for the Tourne sources, mysterious deep-water springs that emerge from the karst landscape. Modern Bourg-Saint-Andéol is a cultural crossroads, offering a mix of Provencal atmosphere, renowned vineyards, and proximity to the famous Ardèche gorges, making it for heritage lovers.
