Grenoble-Sud encompasses the modern expansions of the city and key innovation hubs near the communes of Échirolles and Pont-de-Claix. This area played a pivotal role during the 1968 Winter Olympics, leading to the construction of the Alpexpo exhibition center and significant residential developments. Today, the southern sector is a major base for scientific research and high technology, particularly in biotechnology and sustainable energy sectors. The landscape is dominated by the majestic Belledonne Massif, providing a dramatic backdrop to the Isère valley. Cultural highlights include the MC2: Maison de la Culture, a premier French center for the performing arts. Recent urban redevelopment projects have focused on converting former industrial sites into sustainable eco-districts. The area is efficiently linked to the historic city center and railway station by an extensive tramway network.
