Set along the eastern banks of the mighty Rhône river, Saint-Maurice-l'Exil is a community defined by its relationship with both water and modern energy. While dominated visually by the cooling towers of the nearby Saint-Alban nuclear power plant, the town has developed a surprisingly rich recreational infrastructure. The Parc de l'Étang is a large, beautifully landscaped public area featuring a calm lake, modern playgrounds, and extensive picnic grounds that serve as the main gathering spot for locals. The town's name, featuring the unusual word "Exil", is historically linked to its former geographic isolation before modern bridges connected it to the wider region. Cycling along the ViaRhôna, a major European bike route passing directly by the town, gives an excellent way to explore the riverbanks and the surrounding agricultural plains. Visitors can easily cross the river to explore the famous terraced vineyards of the Pilat Regional Nature Park. The local culinary scene features a mix of traditional Dauphinois potato dishes and fresh river fish, served in unpretentious, welcoming local bistros.
