Located in the Isère department, Pont-Évêque is located within the narrow valley of the Gère river, sitting right on the eastern edge of the historic city of Vienne. The town takes its name from a medieval bridge constructed over the river by the archbishops of Vienne. Historically, the fast-flowing waters of the Gère made Pont-Évêque a vital hub for the textile and paper industries during the 19th-century industrial revolution. Today, visitors walking along the riverbanks can still spot the brick facades of former mills and factories that characterize the town's industrial heritage. Modern Pont-Évêque has transitioned into a calm residential community bordered by steep, forested hills that provide local trails for nature walks. Its prime location allows visitors to experience the laid-back atmosphere of the northern Dauphiné countryside while being just a few minutes away from the preserved Roman monuments of Vienne, such as the Temple of Augustus and Livia.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
