Each early June in Annonay, the birthplace of the hot-air balloon, around thirty balloons take off and the Montgolfier brothers' first flight is re-enacted in period costume.
Tucked away in the rolling green hills of the Ardèche department in the northern part of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, Annonay is world-renowned as the historic birthplace of aviation. It was here in 1783 that the Montgolfier brothers invented and launched the very first hot air balloon, forever changing human history. The town proudly celebrates this incredible legacy every June with a spectacular hot air balloon festival that fills the sky with spirited colors and draws visitors from all over. Beyond its aeronautical fame, Annonay features a rich industrial heritage, particularly in paper manufacturing, which is brilliantly showcased at the Musée des Papeteries Canson et Montgolfier. Walking through the narrow, medieval streets of the historic center, visitors can admire elegant bourgeois houses and characterful squares that reflect the town's prosperous past. The surrounding landscape, characterized by deep river valleys and sprawling chestnut forests, provides excellent opportunities for hiking, cycling, and outdoor exploration. Combining a spirit of invention with authentic French provincial charm, Annonay provides a uniquely enriching experience for travelers looking to discover a lesser-known yet historically significant corner of France.
