Situated in the Gier valley between Saint-Étienne and Lyon, L'Horme is deeply rooted in the heavy industrial history of the Loire department. For much of the 19th and 20th centuries, this town was a powerhouse of metallurgy and coal transport, forging components for railways and machinery that built modern France. While the massive foundries and smoking chimneys are a thing of the past, the town retains an unpretentious, hard-working character, with scattered architectural remnants of its manufacturing peak. Today, L'Horme appeals to visitors primarily as a highly accessible threshold to the Parc Naturel Régional du Pilat, which rises dramatically to the south. The transition from the urbanized, historically industrial valley floor to the dense forests, rocky peaks, and hiking trails of the Pilat massif takes only a few minutes. Travelers often use L'Horme as a practical base camp to stock up on supplies before driving up the steep mountain roads towards the Crêt de la Perdrix or the easy on the eye hillside villages nearby.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
