The Kalix River (Kalixälven) is one of Sweden's four major 'national rivers,' protected by law from hydroelectric development to preserve its natural state. Stretching 430 kilometers, it originates in the Kebnekaise mountain range and flows into the Gulf of Bothnia at the town of Kalix. Because it remains undammed, the river maintains a wild character featuring numerous rapids and waterfalls, such as the prominent Jockfall. Economically and culturally, the river is world-renowned for Kalix Löjrom (vendace roe), which became the first Swedish product to receive the EU's Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status. The pristine environment along its banks provides a habitat for moose, reindeer, and rare bird species, while offering world-class salmon fishing. Historically, the river served as a vital transport route for the Sami people and was strategically significant during 19th-century border conflicts.
