Santahamina is a unique island neighborhood in the eastern archipelago of Helsinki. Serving as a significant military base for the Finnish Defence Forces, the island maintains a serene atmosphere. Because of restricted access, much of Santahamina's natural environment has been exceptionally well-preserved, featuring dense pine forests, rocky shorelines, and a peaceful maritime landscape away from the city buzz. The shorelines hide several welcoming, tranquil beaches serving the local community and military personnel. The Varusmiesten uimaranta is a well-known spot offering refreshing swims in the Baltic Sea. Other scenic spots include Furuvik's swimming beach and the Porvariskuninkaanpuiston uimaranta. These beaches are characterized by their natural, uncommercialized setting, surrounded by Finnish coastal flora and remarkable views. Access requires passing through a military checkpoint, adding an element of exclusivity. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge, reachable by public transport. Gastronomy caters to the resident community, but traditional Finnish coastal flavors, such as salmon and rye bread, are a staple here.
