Kouvola is the administrative center of the Kymenlaakso region and serves as a vital railway junction connecting Helsinki with Eastern Finland. The city gained prominence through the paper and pulp industry and its strategic position on the rail network. One of its top attractions is Tykkimäki, Finland's third-largest amusement park, which also features a large water park. Kouvola is the excellent base for exploring the Verla Groundwood Mill (UNESCO World Heritage) and the rugged landscapes of Repovesi National Park. Architectural highlights include the Kasarminmäki district, a former Russian garrison with beautiful brick buildings, and industrial housing designed by the legendary Alvar Aalto in Inkeroinen. For winter sports enthusiasts, the Mielakka ski center is located conveniently close to the city center. The city effectively bridges the gap between industrial history and modern outdoor lifestyle, offering plenty of green spaces and forest trails within easy reach of the urban core.
