Aulanko is one of Finland’s most significant landscape parks, located on the outskirts of Hämeenlinna. Developed between 1883 and 1938 by Colonel Hugo Standertskjöld, the park was transformed from rugged wilderness into an English-style garden paradise. He commissioned the creation of artificial lakes (such as Joutsenlampi, the Swan Pond), planted exotic trees, and built pleasant pavilions and grottos. The centerpiece of the park is the 33-meter-high granite observation tower on Aulangonvuori hill, built in 1907. The view from the top overlooking the Vanajavesi valley is one of Finland's 'national landscapes' and is said to have inspired Jean Sibelius to compose his masterpiece, 'Finlandia'. Today, Aulanko features a wealth of activities, including a spa hotel, two golf courses, and an extensive network of hiking and riding trails. The park’s romantic atmosphere is enhanced by man-made ruins and granite walls that blend into the lush forest. Whether it's for a summer picnic, admiring the lively autumn colors, or cross-country skiing in winter, Aulanko remains a top destination for nature lovers. It stands as a unique testament to early 20th-century park design and Finnish cultural history, offering visitors a peaceful retreat with sweeping views.
