Porvoo is the second oldest city in Finland, located roughly 50 kilometers east of Helsinki at the mouth of the Porvoonjoki River. It was granted city rights in 1346 by King Magnus Eriksson of Sweden. The city is best known for its medieval Old Town, featuring iconic ochre-red wooden storehouses along the riverbank that once held trade goods. Historically, it is significant as the site of the Diet of Porvoo in 1809, where Tsar Alexander I established Finland as an autonomous Grand Duchy within the Russian Empire. The 15th-century Gothic Porvoo Cathedral sits atop a hill overlooking the historic district and remains a central spiritual and cultural landmark. Today, Porvoo is a major tourist destination and a haven for artists, notably having been the home of national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg. Its narrow cobblestone streets, artisan boutiques, and well-preserved architecture offer a unique glimpse into Finland’s long maritime and colonial history.
