New Kesälahti Church (Finland)

Weather…

The New Kesälahti Church, consecrated in 1950, is a significant work by the architect Aulis Blomstedt. It was built to replace the historic wooden church from 1830, which was tragically destroyed by a fire caused by military action in July 1941 during the Continuation War. This modern red-brick building represents a departure from traditional wooden architecture, reflecting the functionalist ideals prevalent in Finnish post-war design. Notably, the separate wooden bell tower, dating back to 1836 and designed by the famous architect Carl Ludvig Engel, survived the 1941 fire and still stands proudly next to the modern church. This combination of the surviving classical belfry and the mid-century modern church creates a unique historical contrast on the site. The interior is characterized by its simplicity and abundance of natural light, fostering a focused spiritual atmosphere. Located in the North Karelia region, the church sits on a scenic isthmus between the large lakes of Puruvesi and Paasivesi.
