Punkaharju is one of Finland’s oldest and most iconic nature reserves. It features a striking seven-kilometer-long esker ridge that narrows down between the Puruvesi and Pihlajavesi lakes, offering sweeping water views on both sides. The ridge, covered in majestic pine trees, was a favorite of Russian Tsar Alexander I, who ordered its protection as early as 1803, making it a cornerstone of Finnish national identity. A major highlight is Lusto, The Finnish Forest Museum, which showcases the importance of wood and forests to Finnish life through modern, interactive exhibits. Art lovers should visit the Retretti Art Centre, famous for its unique underground galleries carved into granite bedrock. The historic Hotel Punkaharju, a striking red wooden building from the tsarist era, remains a popular spot for fine dining and accommodation. During the summer, the ridge is a paradise for cyclists and hikers, with paths running along the top of the esker. The surrounding waters are good for swimming and boating. In winter, Punkaharju is a premier destination for long-distance tour skating on natural ice trails. The area is conveniently connected by rail, with its own station on the line between Parikkala and Savonlinna. The mid-summer months provide the most idyllic conditions for enjoying this classic Finnish landscape.
