Nurmes is an easy on the eye city in the northeastern part of the North Karelia region, located on the northern shore of Lake Pielinen. The city was founded in 1810 and is known for its rich Karelian culture and architecture, particularly the Bomba House, a replica of a traditional Karelian manor. Nurmes received full city status in 1974 and has since developed into a center for the food industry and wood processing. The city is often referred to as the Christmas Capital of Finland, hosting numerous festive events and traditions. The landscape is defined by rolling hills, dense forests, and the vast water surface of Lake Pielinen, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities.
