Pyhäjärvi is a city located in the southern part of Northern Ostrobothnia, primarily known for its significant mining heritage and the scenic lake that shares its name. The municipality was granted city status in 1993 and was briefly known as Pyhäsalmi before reverting to its original name in 1996. The economic backbone of the region is the Pyhäsalmi mine, which is one of the deepest base metal mines in Europe, producing zinc and copper. Geographically, the city sits at a vital transport crossroads where Highway 4 meets the railway line to Iisalmi. Lake Pyhäjärvi, with its crystal-clear waters and numerous islands, provides excellent opportunities for fishing and water-based recreation. In recent years, the city has become a site for high-level scientific research, utilizing the mine's deep shafts for particle physics experiments. Culturally, the city is famous for the 'Full Moon Dance Festival,' which brings world-class contemporary dance to this rural setting. Pyhäjärvi maintains a balance between its industrial output and a deep-rooted tradition in agriculture and forestry.
