Helvetinjärvi National Park, whose name translates to 'Hell's Lake,' is located in the Ruovesi municipality and was established in 1982. Covering 50 square kilometers, the area is famous for its dramatic geology, created by tectonic faults millions of years ago. Its most iconic feature is Helvetinkolu, a narrow rock gorge only a few meters wide that drops steeply toward Lake Helvetinjärvi. The landscape is characterized by rugged cliffs, deep canyons, and clear forest lakes surrounded by dense boreal coniferous forests. Since the 19th century, the park has been a popular destination for artists and travelers drawn by its wild, untamed beauty.
