Lake Haromaya (Ethiopia)

Weather…

Lake Haromaya is an inland body of water located in eastern Ethiopia, near the town and university of the same name. It gained international notoriety as a stark example of environmental degradation when, by 2004, it had almost completely dried up due to excessive water extraction for irrigation and climate-induced drought. Prior to its disappearance, the lake was a vital source of water for Harar and surrounding towns, as well as a productive fishery. In recent years, however, concerted watershed management efforts and massive reforestation projects in the surrounding highlands have led to a gradual and hopeful recovery of the lake's water levels. The restoration of the lake is crucial for stabilizing the local microclimate and recharging groundwater aquifers in a semi-arid region. As the water returns, Lake Haromaya is once again becoming a habitat for aquatic birds and a focal point for ecological research on sustainable water management in Sub-Saharan Africa.
