Harar Jugol (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The historic fortified town of Harar Jugol is located on a high plateau in eastern Ethiopia and is widely regarded as the fourth holiest city of Islam. The city is enclosed by a five-meter-high stone wall, known as Jugol, built between the 13th and 16th centuries, which features five original entrance gates. Within these walls, a dense labyrinth of narrow alleys houses 82 mosques, three of which date back to the 10th century, and 102 shrines of Muslim scholars and saints. The architecture is characterized by unique Harari townhouses, which integrate African and Islamic traditions in their interior design and structural layout. Harar served for centuries as a vital commercial hub, connecting the Ethiopian highlands with the coastal regions of the Horn of Africa. The city remains a bustling center of Harari culture, known for its traditional handicrafts and its status as a major center of Islamic learning. It was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2006, recognizing its exceptional universal value.
