Corte (Corsican: Corti) is a captivating town located in the geographical heart of Corsica, within the Haute-Corse department. It holds a unique place in the island's history as the capital of the independent Corsican Republic under the leadership of Pasquale Paoli in the 18th century. Positioned at the confluence of the Tavignano and Restonica rivers, the town is surrounded by rugged granite mountains. Its most iconic landmark is the Citadel, often called the 'Eagle's Nest,' which perches dramatically on a rocky outcrop overlooking the town. Today, the fortress houses the Museum of Corsica, dedicated to the island's ethnographic and historical heritage. Since 1981, Corte has regained its status as an animated student town with the reopening of the University of Corsica Pasquale Paoli, bringing a youthful energy to its steep, historic stone streets. The old town is characterized by its tall, austere grey buildings and narrow alleyways that reflect a resilient mountain culture. For nature enthusiasts, Corte is the ultimate gateway to central Corsica's wild landscapes, including the wide-open Restonica Valley and its pristine glacial lakes. The local economy is driven by university services, heritage tourism, and traditional mountain farming, particularly the production of goat cheese and chestnut-based products.
