Mlilwane Forest (Eswatini)

Weather…

The Mlilwane Forest is located within the Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary in the Ezulwini Valley of central Eswatini. It consists of a mosaic of indigenous riparian vegetation, planted woodland, and open savanna landscapes. The sanctuary was established in 1961 by Ted Reilly on his family's farm and was Eswatini's first nature conservation project, aimed at saving dwindling wildlife populations. The forest provides a safe haven for numerous species, including zebras, antelopes, and warthogs, which roam freely due to the absence of large predators. Geographically, the area is bordered by striking granite formations such as Nyonyane Peak. Historically, the valley was once a hunting ground for Swazi royalty before agricultural activity increased in the region. Today, the forest serves as a hub for environmental education and sustainable tourism. Reforestation with indigenous tree species plays a central role in restoring the ecological balance of the valley.
