Pirita Convent Ruins (Estonia)

Weather…

The ruins of Pirita Convent in Tallinn are the remnants of what was once the largest religious complex in Old Livonia. Founded in 1407 by three prominent Tallinn merchants, the convent of the Order of St. Bridget was consecrated in 1436. It was unique for its time as a double monastery, housing both monks and nuns in strictly separated quarters. The monumental convent church stood 24 meters high, and its striking 35-meter-tall western limestone facade has survived to this day as a prominent local landmark. During the Livonian War in 1577, the convent was pillaged and destroyed by the forces of Ivan the Terrible, after which it was never fully restored. Significant preservation efforts took place in the 1930s and 1990s to stabilize the limestone structures. In 2001, a new convent building was erected adjacent to the ruins, allowing the Bridgettine tradition to continue at this historic site.
