Dahlak Kebir is the largest and most populated island of the Dahlak Archipelago in the Red Sea. Travelers come here to experience a fascinating blend of ancient history and completely pristine natural environments. Key sights include an ancient Islamic necropolis with intricate Kufic script tombstones, centuries-old water cisterns, and scattered fossils. Nature enthusiasts are captivated by the untouched coral reefs, crystal-clear turquoise waters, sea turtles, and animated underwater biodiversity. Given the island's isolation, local gastronomy is simple and highly localized, consisting almost entirely of fresh daily catches cooked traditionally over open fires by local fishermen, often served with flatbread. To reach Dahlak Kebir, visitors must charter a boat or yacht from the mainland port city of Massawa, and securing a special government travel permit beforehand is strictly required. The best time to visit is from October to April, when the extreme heat subsides, the climate becomes much milder, and the Red Sea is calm enough for safe boating, diving, and snorkeling.
