Massawa, a major port city on the Red Sea, has served for centuries as Eritrea's historic gateway to international trade and maritime communication. The city is uniquely spread across two islands, Taulud and Batse, and a mainland area, all interconnected by causeways. Throughout its long history, Massawa was a prize contested and influenced by various powers, including the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, and Italy, each leaving a distinct mark on its urban landscape. The Old Town on Batse Island is particularly noted for its coral-stone architecture and Ottoman-style buildings, which exhibit an intricate blend of Islamic and coastal influences. A pivotal moment in its modern history was the 1990 Operation Fenkil, a decisive naval and land battle that led to the city's liberation during the Eritrean War of Independence. Despite significant damage from past conflicts, Massawa retains a haunting beauty with its narrow alleys, grand arches, and seaside promenades. Currently, it serves as the nation's primary deep-water port and a hub for the fishing industry. It is also the main jumping-off point for exploring the pristine Dahlak Archipelago, renowned for its diverse marine life.
