Massawa Housing Complex (Eritrea)

Weather…

The residential housing complex in Massawa's old town is a fascinating example of coral-based architecture unique to the Red Sea region. Traditionally, these buildings were constructed using blocks of coral harvested from the sea, showcasing a blend of Ottoman, Arabic, and later Italian architectural influences. A defining feature is the wooden 'mashrabiya' balcony, designed to facilitate natural ventilation while providing privacy for the residents. For centuries, Massawa served as a major strategic port, which is reflected in the dense, labyrinthine layout of its residential quarters. Many of these structures suffered significant damage during the 1921 earthquake and later during the War of Independence. Despite their weathered state, the ruins and restored sections offer a deep insight into the cosmopolitan history of this port city, once celebrated as the 'Pearl of the Red Sea'.
