Ancient Port of Zula (Eritrea)

Weather…

The ancient port of Zula, located in the gulf of the same name in eastern Eritrea, is inseparably linked to the history of Adulis and the maritime exploration of the Red Sea. For millennia, Zula served as an anchorage and starting point for expeditions into the interior of the Horn of Africa. During the colonial era, the location regained strategic importance, particularly during the British Magdala expedition of 1868, when a huge port complex with a railway connection was built here for the advance against Emperor Tewodros II. The region is geologically fascinating, situated at the meeting point of the African and Arabian tectonic plates, resulting in a unique coastal landscape. Today, Zula is a quiet fishing village that nevertheless hides rich archaeological treasures beneath its surface, still waiting for full exploration. It remains a symbolic place bridging ancient seafaring and modern geopolitical developments in the region.
