Ancient Port City of Adulis (Eritrea)

Weather…

The Ancient Port City of Adulis was one of the most significant maritime hubs of the Red Sea during antiquity, serving as the primary gateway for the Kingdom of Aksum to the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean trade networks. Located approximately 50 kilometers south of modern-day Massawa in the Zula Gulf, it flourished between the 1st and 7th centuries AD as a cosmopolitan center where ivory, gold, slaves, and exotic animals were exchanged for luxury goods from Egypt, Rome, and India. Archaeological excavations have revealed remains of monumental architecture, including Christian basilicas and residential complexes, reflecting its diverse religious and social structure before its decline following Arab expansion in the region. Today, the site remains a crucial archaeological area for understanding the early trade dynamics of the Horn of Africa and the broader Red Sea world. The ruins provide a window into the sophisticated urban planning and economic prowess of the Aksumite civilization at its maritime peak.
