Gash River (Eritrea)

Weather…

The Gash River, also known as the Mareb in its upper reaches, is a significant seasonal river originating in the central highlands of Eritrea. It forms a natural border between Eritrea and Ethiopia for a long stretch before flowing westwards into the plains of Sudan. Although the river is dry for most of the year, it carries vast amounts of water during the rainy season between June and September, which is vital for agriculture in the Gash-Barka region. The Gash Delta in Sudan is a key irrigation area where fertile sediments allow for the cultivation of cotton and grains. Diverse ecosystems are found surrounding the river, providing habitat for numerous bird species and African elephants. Historically, the river's course has often been the subject of border disputes, but today it plays a central role in national development projects for food security.
