Riaba, historically known as Concepción, is a coastal town on the southeastern shore of Bioko Island in Equatorial Guinea. Located in the Bioko Sur Province, it is surrounded by the fertile slopes of Pico Basile and volcanic soils that provide convenient conditions for agriculture. During the colonial era, Riaba was a major hub for cocoa plantations, which brought economic prosperity to the town and facilitated the construction of numerous Spanish-style buildings. The region's geography is defined by steep cliffs, dense tropical vegetation, and small coves that, while making maritime access difficult, offer natural protection. In recent decades, the town has transitioned into a quieter, agriculturally focused community, while infrastructure improvements to the coastal road have enhanced its link to Malabo. Culturally, Riaba is a stronghold for the Bubi people, the indigenous inhabitants of Bioko, whose spiritual practices are deeply connected to the surrounding mountains and forests. The town maintains a peaceful atmosphere and currently serves as the regional administrative center for the southern part of the island.
