The Old Palace of Moca is a historic mountain retreat located at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters on the Moca Plateau of Bioko Island. The palace overlooks the dramatic Biao crater and the surrounding volcanic landscapes, providing a serene and scenic environment. Visiting
The Old Palace of Moca is a historic mountain retreat on Bioko, once a summer residence for governors. Today the building is in ruins and can only be viewed from outside.
Typical hours
Since it is a ruin, there are no opening hours - the grounds are accessible at any time. There is no ticket booth or supervision, visit at your own risk.
Photography
Photography is expressly allowed here; the photogenic ruin provides great subjects. Watch out for uneven ground and dilapidated structures if you get closer.
Time needed
Allow about 20 to 30 minutes for exploring the ruins and the surrounding mountain landscape. The drive from Malabo takes an additional hour or so.
Combine with
Combine the trip with a hike in Pico Basilé National Park. The coffee plantations in Moca are also worth a visit.
Getting there
The palace is located in the mountains of Bioko, about 40 km from Malabo. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended as the roads are partly in poor condition.
Insider tip
Bring plenty of water and insect repellent, as it's humid in the mountains. Start early in the morning to avoid the intense midday heat on the way back.
