Moka (also spelled Moka) is a significant town in the highlands of Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, located in the Bioko Sur province. The town sits at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters above sea level in a volcanic valley known for its cooler and often misty climate. Named after the legendary Bubi King Moka, the town is considered the cultural heart of the Bubi people, the indigenous inhabitants of the island. The area surrounding Moka is of extraordinary ecological importance, home to numerous endemic species and volcanic crater lakes such as Lake Moka. Due to the fertile volcanic soils, the region is a major center for agriculture, particularly for growing temperate vegetables that do not thrive in the lower tropical regions. Scientists frequently use Moka as a base for research into the unique biodiversity of the Bioko mountains. The town's architecture reflects both colonial influences and traditional Bubi elements, making it one of the country's most intriguing cultural centers.
