Kharga Oasis is the largest and most developed of the five oases in Egypt's Western Desert. Serving as the capital of the New Valley Governorate (Al Wadi al Jadid), it is a major administrative and economic center today. Kharga is located along the historic Darb el-Arba'in (Forty Days Road) caravan route, which once connected the Nile Valley to Sudan. Archaeologically, the oasis is of outstanding significance; the Temple of Hibis is one of the best-preserved Persian-period temples in Egypt. Another highlight is the Bagawat Cemetery, one of the world's oldest Christian necropolises, featuring over 200 mud-brick chapels. The modern city of Kharga has a well-developed infrastructure, including an airport and university branches. Its economy is driven by agriculture, particularly grain and date production, and phosphate mining. Government efforts to settle the New Valley have led to a steady expansion of irrigated land. Kharga provides visitors with deep insights into the history of desert trade and Egypt's Coptic era. The local museum houses precious artifacts discovered across the entire region.
