White Desert
Nature lovers and photographers visit the White Desert National Park to witness one of Egypt's most surreal and otherworldly landscapes. Located just north of the Farafra Oasis, the area is dotted with massive, chalky rock formations that mimic giant mushrooms, animals, and abstract sculptures. When the sun sets, these white rocks take on spectacular hues of pink and orange, and under the moonlight, the desert floor looks uncannily like a snow-covered arctic landscape. Camping overnight in the White Desert is an unforgettable experience. Visitors typically join guided 4x4 tours where Bedouin guides prepare traditional meals over a campfire, such as roasted chicken and fragrant rice, served alongside sweet mint tea. The complete lack of light pollution here provides some of the most spectacular stargazing opportunities in the world. The journey usually begins from Cairo to the Bahariya Oasis, where travelers switch to a robust 4x4 vehicle for the desert trek. The best time to visit is during the winter months, from November to March, when daytime temperatures are pleasant. However, nights in the desert can get surprisingly cold during this season, so bringing warm clothing is essential.
