Jaghbub is a remote oasis town located deep in the eastern Libyan Desert, near the border with Egypt. The town holds immense religious and historical significance, as it served as the spiritual and administrative heart of the Senussi movement during the 19th century. Founded by Sayyid Muhammad ibn Ali as-Senussi, the oasis became home to a prestigious Islamic university and a grand mosque that drew scholars and pilgrims from across North Africa. Geographically, Jaghbub is situated within a depression below sea level, allowing for the emergence of groundwater that sustains lush date palm groves amidst the surrounding extreme desert environment. Due to its strategic isolation, it functioned as a vital stronghold for Libyan resistance fighters against Italian colonial forces. Today, Jaghbub remains a symbol of Libya’s Islamic heritage, housing the tombs of the Senussi dynasty and preserving a unique cultural identity shaped by its history as a center of learning and Sufi spirituality.
