- Bring plenty of cash as ATMs are sparse and unreliable in this small oasis town.

Small stalls sell hand-woven rugs and bags made from camel or sheep wool.

Farafra is the smallest and most isolated of the oases in Egypt's Western Desert. It is primarily famous for its proximity to the White Desert (Sahara el Beyda), a national park featuring bizarre white chalk rock formations shaped by wind erosion. The only village in the oasis, Qasr Farafra, has largely maintained its traditional character with simple mud-brick houses and a relaxed pace of life. A unique cultural highlight is the Badr Museum, where local artist Badr Abdel Moghny depicts oasis life through his sculptures and paintings. Farafra's economy is centered on agriculture; in recent years, government projects have reclaimed vast areas of land for growing grains and fruits. Hot sulfur springs, such as Bir Sitta, offer visitors a chance to relax in the heart of the desert. The remoteness of Farafra makes it a well-suited destination for adventurers and those seeking solitude. The oasis community is close-knit and continues to uphold its customs despite increasing tourist interest. Farafra also serves as a gateway for expeditions to the Black Desert and the Crystal Mountain.
