Helwan Iron and Steel Works (Egypt)

Weather…

The Helwan Iron and Steel Works, located south of Cairo, served for decades as the premier symbol of Egyptian industrialization following the 1952 revolution. Established by presidential decree in 1954, the complex was constructed with extensive technological assistance from the Soviet Union. Production officially commenced in 1958, laying the foundation for Egypt's heavy industry and supporting both national housing construction and strategic military projects. The massive complex integrated blast furnaces, rolling mills, and its own power plants, making it one of the largest industrial facilities in Africa at the time. During its peak, the works employed tens of thousands of personnel, profoundly shaping the social fabric of the city of Helwan. Despite its historical legacy, a lack of modernization and mounting financial losses led to the decision to liquidate the state-owned enterprise in 2021. Nevertheless, the site remains a landmark of Egyptian economic history and the era of Arab socialism.
