Citadel of Saladin (Egypt)

Weather…

The Citadel of Saladin, perched atop the Muqattam Hill, is one of the most formidable medieval fortresses in the world and served as the seat of Egyptian government for over 700 years. Founded in 1176 by the Ayyubid ruler Salah ad-Din (Saladin) to defend Cairo against Crusader incursions, the fortress remained the center of power until the mid-19th century. Its skyline is dominated by the majestic Mosque of Muhammad Ali, often called the Alabaster Mosque, which was built in the mid-1800s in the ornate Ottoman style with towering 82-meter minarets. Within its massive stone walls, the citadel also houses the earlier Mamluk-style Mosque of an-Nasir Muhammad and several national museums dedicated to military history and the police. A marvel of medieval engineering, the Well of Joseph (Bir Yusuf), was excavated 85 meters deep into the bedrock to provide water during sieges. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Citadel is a premier cultural landmark that features sweeping panoramic views of the city of Cairo, stretching all the way to the Great Pyramids of Giza on the horizon.
