Saqqara Necropolis (Egypt)

Weather…

The Saqqara Necropolis served as the primary burial ground for the ancient capital of Memphis for over 3,000 years. Located about 30 kilometers south of Cairo, it is home to numerous pyramids, mastaba tombs, and religious complexes spanning from the 1st Dynasty to the Christian era. Its most famous landmark is the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the world's first large-scale cut stone structure. Saqqara is not only a royal cemetery but also contains beautifully decorated tombs of high officials, which feature detailed reliefs of daily life in the Old Kingdom, including scenes of farming, hunting, and metalworking. Another significant feature is the Serapeum, an underground labyrinth where the sacred Apis bulls were buried in massive granite sarcophagi weighing up to 80 tons. Recent archaeological finds, including hundreds of intact coffins and mummies from the Late Period, continue to make Saqqara one of Egypt's most vital and exciting excavation sites.

📋 Practical info

🚪
Visiting
Visitors can explore a large portion of this expansive outdoor archaeological site, including the iconic Step Pyramid complex. Many of the newly opened tombs and smaller pyramids can also be accessed internally, though some may require separate tickets or have restricted entry.
🕒
Typical hours
The necropolis is typically open to visitors from early morning until late afternoon, operating seven days a week. It is highly recommended to arrive as close to opening time as possible to beat the intense midday heat and avoid the larger tour bus crowds.
📷
Photography
Photography of the Step Pyramid and the vast desert landscapes is permitted and has spectacular wide-angle shots. However, using cameras or smartphones inside the individual tombs often requires purchasing a special photography ticket at the main entrance, and flash is strictly forbidden.
⏱️
Time needed
Plan to spend at least three to four hours to adequately cover the Step Pyramid complex and a selection of the most significant surrounding tombs. If you intend to explore the site comprehensively, including the Imhotep Museum, allocating a full half-day is necessary.
Combine with
Saqqara is frequently visited in combination with the nearby ancient capital of Memphis and the pyramids of Dahshur on a unified day trip. Together, these sites provide a comprehensive overview of early Egyptian funerary practices and the evolution of pyramid construction.
🧭
Getting there
Located about 30 kilometers south of Cairo, the most practical way to reach Saqqara is by hiring a private taxi for the day or joining a guided tour. Public transportation options to the site are very limited and generally too complex and time-consuming for most short-term visitors.
💡
Insider tip
Sun protection is absolutely crucial as there is almost no natural shade across the vast desert site. Bring a wide-brimmed hat, plenty of high SPF sunscreen, and more bottled water than you think you will need, as vendors inside the archaeological zone can be scarce.
