Alexandria Roman Amphitheatre (Egypt)

Weather…

The Roman Amphitheatre of Alexandria, located in the Kom el-Dikka district, is the only structure of its kind ever discovered in Egypt. The site was unearthed accidentally in the 1960s by a Polish-Egyptian archaeological mission during excavations for a new government building. Built in the 2nd century AD, the theatre underwent several renovations and expansions throughout its history. It features 13 tiers of white and grey marble seating arranged in a U-shape, originally accommodating approximately 600 spectators. In late antiquity, the venue likely evolved from a performance space into a center for political meetings and educational lectures, serving as part of an ancient university complex known as Auditoria. The surrounding archaeological park also preserves the remains of Roman baths and residential villas with well-preserved mosaics, making it a key historical destination within modern Alexandria.
