Wolf Volcano (Ecuador)

Weather…

Wolf Volcano, also known as Cerro Wolf, is the highest volcano in the Galápagos Islands, rising to 1,707 m on northern Isabela Island. It is an active shield volcano with a summit caldera about 6 km in diameter and 1,000 m deep, making it one of the deepest calderas in the archipelago. The volcano is named after Theodor Wolf, a German geologist who studied the islands in the 19th century. The most recent eruption began on January 7, 2022, producing lava flows that reached the northern coast and altered the coastline. Wolf Volcano is a key habitat for endemic species such as the Galápagos penguin and marine iguanas, which thrive in the nutrient-rich waters. The caldera sometimes hosts a crater lake. Due to its remote location and harsh conditions, climbing Wolf Volcano is challenging and requires a permit. The area is part of the Galápagos National Park, established in 1959. Geological studies indicate that the oldest lava flows are about 100,000 years old, but the current shape formed within the last 50,000 years.
