The Old Stock Exchange (Børsen) in Copenhagen is one of the city's most recognizable landmarks and a masterpiece of Danish Renaissance architecture. Commissioned by King Christian IV and built between 1619 and 1640, it was designed by architects Hans and Lorenz van Steenwinckel. The building is world-famous for its unique 56-meter-tall Dragon Spire (Dragespir), featuring the intertwined tails of four dragons. For centuries, Børsen served as a central hub for trade, symbolizing Copenhagen's rise as a leading commercial power in Northern Europe. Its red brick facade is elaborately decorated with sandstone figures and Dutch-inspired ornaments. In April 2024, the building sustained severe damage during a catastrophic fire that caused the collapse of its iconic spire. Despite this, reconstruction efforts began immediately, highlighting its status as an irreplaceable part of Denmark's architectural and economic history.
