Børsen (Denmark)

Weather…

Børsen, the former stock exchange of Copenhagen, is one of the oldest and most significant historical buildings in the Danish capital. Commissioned by King Christian IV and constructed between 1619 and 1640, it was part of his ambitious plan to establish Copenhagen as a leading trade hub in Northern Europe. Designed in the Dutch Renaissance style, the building is famous for its exceptional length and the iconic Dragon Spire, which features the intertwined tails of four dragons. These dragons were believed to protect the building from fire and enemies while representing the union of the Scandinavian realms. The building functioned as the Royal Exchange until 1974 and currently serves as the headquarters of the Danish Chamber of Commerce. Its elaborate facade, characterized by ornate gables and intricate stone carvings, showcases the mastery of 17th-century craftsmanship. In April 2024, Børsen was severely damaged by a massive fire that led to the collapse of its world-famous spire, a loss felt deeply across the nation as a cultural tragedy. Despite the extensive damage, plans for a meticulous restoration were initiated immediately to preserve this symbol of Denmark's economic legacy. Børsen is located on the island of Slotsholmen, adjacent to Christiansborg Palace and the Danish Parliament.
