Hjelm Hage (Denmark)

Weather…

Hjelm Hage is a prominent coastal area east of Ebeltoft on the Djursland peninsula, known for its steep cliffs and geological diversity. The landscape was shaped during the last ice age and today displays impressive profiles of moraine deposits and moler layers. From the shore, there is a direct view of the small island of Hjelm, which gained fame in the Middle Ages as a hideout for outlaws, most notably Marsk Stig after the assassination of King Erik Klipping in 1286. The vegetation at Hjelm Hage consists mainly of coastal heath and dry grasslands adapted to the salty winds of the Kattegat. Botanically, the area is significant for specialized plant species that thrive on the calcareous soils of the slopes. Erosion caused by sea waves continuously exposes new geological layers and occasionally fossils. Hiking trails lead along the cliff edge, offering expansive views across the Hjelm Dyb strait.
