The Mols Forests are a central component of the Mols Bjerge National Park on the Djursland peninsula in Jutland. The landscape was heavily sculpted during the last ice age, as glacial movements left behind prominent hill ranges, kettles, and dead-ice depressions. The forest cover today consists primarily of ancient beech and oak stands, interspersed with open heathlands and dry grasslands. The area has been inhabited since the Stone Age, as evidenced by numerous megalithic tombs and burial mounds scattered throughout the region. A significant cultural landmark is the Kalø Castle ruin on the outskirts of the park, accessible via a historic stone causeway. Ecologically, the national park provides a habitat for rare butterfly species, reptiles like the sand lizard, and various birds of prey. The combination of glacial geology, species-rich forests, and expansive views over the bays of Ebeltoft and Aarhus makes the area one of Denmark's most scenic landscapes.
