Church of Kalundborg (Denmark)

Weather…

The Church of Our Lady (Vor Frue Kirke) in Kalundborg is one of Northern Europe's most extraordinary medieval structures. It was built around the year 1170 by Esbern Snare, the brother of Bishop Absalon. The uniqueness of this brick church lies in its Greek cross floor plan and its five prominent towers. The central tower is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, while the four corner towers are named after Saints Anne, Catherine, Mary Magdalene, and Gertrude. The architecture marks the transition from Romanesque to early Gothic and exhibits Byzantine influences, likely inspired by the travels of the crusaders. Despite the collapse of some towers in the 19th century, the church was faithfully restored to its original appearance. The building towers over the historic old town of Kalundborg and once served not only as a house of worship but also as a symbol of noble power. Today, it is a national monument and a major landmark on the island of Zealand.
