Mount Kahuzi is an extinct volcano located in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, part of the Mitumba mountain range. Standing at an elevation of 3,308 meters, it is one of the highest peaks in the South Kivu province. The mountain lies within the Kahuzi-Biega National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site globally recognized for its role in protecting the endangered Eastern Lowland gorilla. Its slopes are blanketed in dense montane rainforest, which transitions into bamboo thickets and afro-alpine vegetation at higher altitudes. Geologically, Kahuzi is tied to the Albertine Rift, where tectonic forces have significantly shaped the local landscape. On clear days, the summit provides sweeping views of Lake Kivu and the surrounding valleys. Despite its ecological value, the region around Mount Kahuzi has often been troubled by armed conflict and illegal mining, posing severe challenges to conservation efforts.
