Lake Upemba is located in the Upemba Depression in the southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, forming part of a vast and complex system of lakes and marshes. It is situated within the boundaries of the Upemba National Park in the Haut-Lomami Province. The lake is primarily fed by the Lualaba River, which winds through the depression, creating an expansive wetland environment. This area is ecologically significant, providing a vital habitat for numerous waterfowl, hippopotamuses, and crocodiles. Floating papyrus islands and dense shoreline vegetation define the landscape and offer protection to a wide variety of fish species. For local communities, the lake is the most important source of fish, often serving as the primary supply of protein in this remote region. Getting there
Lake Upemba in the southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo is very difficult to reach and requires an expedition with 4x4 vehicles starting from Lubumbashi. Often, the final part of the journey is only possible by boat through the vast wetlands of the national park, necessitating careful logistical planning.
Best season
The best time to visit is during the dry season from June to August, when the tracks in the national park are relatively passable and the wetlands recede slightly. During the rainy season, the entire region transforms into an impassable water landscape, making travel to this area nearly impossible and dangerous.
Terrain & paths
The surroundings of the lake are characterized by shallow waters, extensive marshes, and floating islands of vegetation typical of this wetland system. The terrain is extremely confusing and treacherous, as the transition from firm ground to deep mud is often barely discernable, requiring special caution with every movement.
What to bring
Visitors require full expedition gear, including malaria prophylaxis, water purification tablets, and ample fuel reserves for the long journeys. Waterproof clothing and robust footwear are just as important as a comprehensive first-aid kit and satellite communication devices for emergencies.
Parking
There are no organized parking lots; vehicles are usually left under guard at the ranger stations of Upemba National Park before continuing the journey by boat. It is vital never to leave the car unattended in the wilderness to avoid theft or damage caused by wild animals.
Safety
The security situation in the region can be unstable, so it is mandatory to check current conditions beforehand and travel only with local guides. Additionally, hippos and crocodiles in the lake, as well as the risk of tropical diseases, pose significant risks that must not be underestimated.
Time needed
Due to the extreme travel time, a stay of less than three to five days in the region is hardly worthwhile for adequately exploring the lake and its surroundings. Most expeditions plan for at least a week to manage the logistical challenges and allow enough time for wildlife viewing in the wetlands.
